Stephens Co. Commission Meeting Today

Stephens County Commissioners will consider a motion today to set up a short-term recycling location and solution as work continues on a long-term solution.

The Stephens County Commission meets at 8:30 a.m. today in the second-floor courtroom of the historic Stephens County Courthouse in downtown Toccoa.

During the meeting, county commissioners are scheduled to consider a motion to authorize staff to acquire bins to put at the landfill to serve as a single recycling location and to request the county’s Citizens’ Advisory Panel on Litter and Blight to come up with and present a long-term solution to the recycling situation for county residents.

Last month, county commissioners voted to authorize county staff to come up with a plan to present to the commission to set up a recycling drop-off site at the county landfill site on Highway 145 after commissioners had previously voted in March that county convenience sites would no longer separate out recyclable items from household garbage at the county’s convenience sites as of April 1.

County commissioners will start today’s meeting with a public hearing on a variance request at 8:30 a.m.

Following the public hearing will be the work session to discuss items on the meeting agenda.

The business meeting, where commissioners vote on agenda items, will immediately follow the end of the work session.

Other items on today’s business meeting agenda include consideration of two proposed variance requests, consideration of Fiscal Year 2015 budget amendments, and consideration of a motion to sign lease-purchase financing from South State Bank of road equipment under an equipment lease/purchase lease agreement.

Today’s county commission meeting is open to the public.
