Stephens Co. Commission Wrapup

Stephens County Commissioners also ask for more discussion on a budget amendment request from the Sheriff’s Office for televisions in the Stephens County Jail.

Commissioners voted unanimously to postpone that budget amendment, questioning the need for the TV’s.

Sheriff Randy Shirley said it is not meant as a luxury, but as an incentive for inmates at the jail to improve behavior.

County commissioners approved a series of other budget amendments unanimously on Tuesday.

In other action from Tuesday’s Stephens County Commission meeting, the commission approved a number of names to put forth for nomination to the Stephens County Hospital Authority.

The seats of Paula Dickerson, Jon West, and George Sanders are up for consideration.

All three are being put forth to serve another term on the Authority, but by law, the county commission must submit three names for each seat to the Hospital Authority for that board to select who will serve on it.

The other names being put forth are Clay Fisher, Gary LeCroy, Lynn Cox, Brian Akin, Tim Ash, and Jarvis Swilling.

Also on Tuesday, county commissioners unanimously approved a re-zoning request for an Easy Street property from Residential Single Family District to Commercial General for the purpose of someone starting a swimming pool business installation.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers says that the property used to be a business, but was zoned residential. Nobody spoke in opposition to the request.

County Commissioners unanimously approved the appointment of Denver Gunn to the Stephens County Board of Family and Children’s Services for a five-year term ending on June 30, 2020.
