Stephens Co. Commissioners Approve Inmate Work Detail Agreement

Stephens County Commissioners sign off on a new work detail agreement with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office.

Commissioners approved it by a unanimous vote at their meeting on Tuesday.

This is the agreement that provides inmates from the county jail for duties like litter pickup in the county.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said that the original agreement expired June 30 and it has been extended twice already, each time for a period of 60 days, while discussions over the agreement continued.

The last extension was to run out at the end of the month.

Stephens County Commissioner Dean Scarborough said he did want to remove language from the agreement where the county paid $1,700 in additional funding for the first year for equipment for an officer since that had already been done when the program was started.

“Those were the things we were going to purchase in the very, very beginning, which we did,” said Scarborough.

Overall, Stephens County Commission Chair Dennis Bell said he is pleased to see this agreement continue.

“I think it is a good thing we can do this because it does help out the community, especially picking up this litter off of the side of the road,” said Bell.

Scarborough agreed.

Commissioners, as part of the agreement approval, approved the language change requested by Scarborough.
