Stephens Co. Indians Baseball Team Advancing to State Playoffs

The Stephens County Indians baseball team advance to the state playoffs with their 9-4 win over the St. Pius Golden Lions Friday night in Atlanta.  The Indians scored five runs the first inning and never looked back.

Davis Swenson went the distance on the mound for the Indians, scattering seven hits and striking out seven.

Indians Catcher, Bryson Fowler, picked up the first RBI of the game with a single and brought Dawson Sorrells around to score. Nine Indians batted in the first inning and drove in five runs to open things up early on.

The Golden Lions scored one run in the first inning, and the game remained 5-1 until the third inning when Dylan Huff drove in a run to extend the lead to 6-1.

The game remained 6-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning when St. Pius rallied with 3 runs to cut the lead to 6-4.

But in the top of the 7th inning, Stephens County scored 3 more runs on hits by Cole Beitzel, Dawson Dean and Austin Page. The Golden Lions got two hits in the bottom half of the inning, but could not score. Swenson struck out the final batter to secure the victory and put the Indians in the playoffs.

St. Pius finishes their season at 10-19.

Stephens County is now 17-13 overall and 7-8 in Region 8-Quad A, and will advance to the playoffs as the number four seed.  They will take on the number one seed from Region 6-AAAA Friday night in a double header on the road.  Times and opponent will be announced, and WNEG Radio will broadcast those games.

In other games from Region 8-AAAA Friday night, Madison County defeated Jefferson, 2 to 1; and North Oconee defeated Oconee County, 10 to 1.  Madison County finishes as the top team in the region with Oconee finishing second and Jefferson in 3rd place.
