Stephens Co. May Put Proposed Sign Ordinance Out in March

Stephens County Commissioners appear closer to having a proposed sign ordinance ready for the public and the commission to consider.

Last Friday, the county commission met for its yearly planning session and retreat to look at the year ahead.

According to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, one of the main topics on the agenda last Friday was the sign ordinance.

She said that after months of work to try and put something together to get on the table, she feels like the commission has the proposal it is looking for.

“I do believe that when we left we all had a sign ordinance that we agree upon,” said Ayers. “We will make the changes to that ordinance. It was not really a whole lot to do at that point because we had re-written it numerous times.”

She said the goal is to have it on the agenda in March.

There would be public hearings prior to a vote on adoption of a sign ordinance for Stephens County.

County commissioners talked about a number of other issues at their retreat Friday.

Ayers said those topics included nuisance abatement and property clean up, permitting and land use issues, and a preview of some of the county’s top road projects for this summer.

Overall, Ayers said she feels the planning session went very well.

“There was a lot of guidance and decisions made,” said Ayers. “It was a very productive day.”

No formal votes are taken at the planning sessions.

Any items that are discussed must come before the commission at an official meeting before any votes or actions are taken on the topics.
