Stephens Co. Millage Rates Finalized

Millage rates are set for Stephens County property tax payers for 2016.

On Thursday morning, Stephens County Commissioners voted unanimously to finalize both the county government’s millage rate and the school system’s millage rate.

The county government millage rate will remain at 13.41 mills. That is the same rate as last year.

Based on a 13.41 mill tax rate this year, the Stephens County Commission will levy $7,849,143 in property taxes this year. That is an increase of $4,913 or six one-hundredths of a percent.

Meanwhile, the school system’s millage rate will be at 18.3 mills. That is 1.45 mills lower than last year.

According to Stephens County Tax Commissioner Dene Hicks, the drop of 1.45 mills in the school system’s tax rate equates to a $58 decrease in taxes for every $100,000 in property value in Stephens County, not counting any exemptions.

Overall, the Stephens County Board of Education will levy $10,776,574 in property taxes this coming year.

That is a decrease of 7.25 percent from last year.
