Stephens Co. Paving Work Continues

Crews are continuing road work throughout Stephens County.

According to County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, workers from both the contractor on the SPLOST road project, C.W. Matthews, and from the Stephens County Road Department are out tackling various projects.

She said C.W. Matthews crews have finished a number of roads in recent weeks.

“Yonah Dam Road, the portion this year, has been completed, and Memorial Drive and Sorrells Road, although there will be a little bit more work on Sorrells,” said Ayers. “They just finished East Silver Shoals and Bruce Road. They are heading towards Tower Road. That is the C.W. Matthews side.”

Ayers went on to say that county road department workers are taking on other projects in an effort to get as much done as possible during this paving season.

“We have a couple of places on Panther Creek by the church and up at Yonah Dam Road, where we always lose the gravel in the boat ramp,” said Ayers.

She said the county would next do McCurley Road.

Ayers said that the county hopes to have a few more weeks in this paving season.

In August, the Stephens County Commission approved bids for more than $1.73 million in road work throughout the county.

That bid by C.W. Matthews would cover over 20 miles in roads.

Earlier this year, Stephens County Commissioners approved the issuing of bonds to forward fund the road work and the bonds will be paid back with money collected for roads and bridges through SPLOST VI.
