Stephens County School System Releases Student Numbers

The numbers are out for each Stephens County School for the 2016-17 school year. Stephens County High School has 1166 students with 327 in the 9th grade, 318 in 10th, 297 in 11th, and 224 in 12th.

Stephens County Middle School has 283 in 6th grade, 291 in 7th, 319 in 8th. The Middle School also has the 5th grade academy on campus with 303 students for a total of 1196 on campus.

The largest influx of students is at Toccoa Elementary School. Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey told the Stephens County Board of Education at Thursday’s work session that sometimes it is odd how that happens.

“Last year we had an influx of 2nd graders and they are now in 3rd grade. This year we have had a massive influx of 4th graders so Toccoa Elementary has turned out to be the big kid on the block,” said Dorsey.  “It certainly has turned out to be larger than we thought because it seemed like every family that came in this summer had a 4th grader. Odd how that works.”

Dorsey told the board that despite 338 students in 4th grade and 336 in 3rd grade, the student-teacher ratio at Toccoa Elementary is still in good shape.

Rounding out the numbers, at Liberty Elementary School there are 283 students in 2nd grade, and 302 in first grade. At Big A Elementary, there are 162 students in Pre-K, but 314 in the Kindergarten which may require an additional resource teacher to be added.
