Steve Stovall Music Scholarship to Send Four Students to Band Camp

The Steve Stovall Music Scholarship Foundation will send four Stephens County High School Band members to Summer Band Camp.  The Foundation was established in 1974 in memory of Steve Stovall who was student conductor of the band.  Almost $250,000 has been given to support the Stephens County band program and its students, and according to Brent Stovall, chairman of the Foundation, it is due to the generosity of the community.

“The fund was established back in 1974 with a few dollars,” said Stovall. “And the community has actually made this thing happen. They kept donating to the foundation and it’s grown and we’re able to use the interest off the money to do these scholarships.”

This year, two students and the two drum majors for the upcoming marching band season, who will be announced at Tuesday night’s Band Awards Night, will receive music scholarships to attend Marching Band Camp at the University of Georgia in June.  The Foundation will also help meet some additional needs for the band:

“We’re actually going to provide instruments, some funding so they can do things that need to be done to upgrade the band and we’re really excited about that as well,” said Stovall.

Brent Stovall thanked those that donate their time to the Foundation:

“There’s a lot of people that do it that don’t charge us anything,” said Stovall. “We have accountants, banks, attorneys and they take care of us real well and do it out of the goodness of their heart, and do it in memory of Steve. It’s a pleasure to have those guys on board as well.”

Brent Stovall also said it has been a pleasure working with Stephens County High School Band Director Scott Wilcher for the past 26 years.
