Toccoa Commission To Meet Today

Toccoa City Commissioners are set to consider a joint intergovernmental agreement with Stephens County that would cover the paving and maintenance of Memorial Drive at their meeting later today.

The Toccoa City Commission is set to meet at 5 p.m. today at Toccoa City Hall.

Stephens County Commissioners approved this modified agreement on August 11 after tabling an original agreement proposed and approved by the Toccoa City Commission last month.

The need for such an agreement arose out of issues of jurisdiction surrounding Memorial Drive and the planned re-surfacing of the road.

Under the agreement approved two weeks ago by Stephens County Commissioners, the county would be responsible for paving Memorial Drive between Big A Road and the Toccoa By-pass.

Once Memorial Drive is paved, the agreement signed by the county calls for the city of Toccoa to be responsible for all future maintenance of Memorial Drive, both those parts in the city and those parts in the county between Big A Road and the Toccoa By-pass.

The agreement also calls for the city to provide its ladder truck to assist the county’s volunteer fire departments as needed and to continue to provide mowing and brush work at the Stephens County Park on Highway 123.

Also, the agreement would require the city to waive water and natural gas tap fees and provide water hydrants free of charge at the site of three fire stations being built in the county with SPLOST VI funds.

Stephens County Commissioners tabled the original agreement proposed by city commissioners because of concerns they had regarding the original proposed terms.

Other items on the city commission’s agenda for today’s meeting include consideration of humane shelter funding and consideration of Railroad Street parking easement.

Today’s 5 p.m. city commission meeting also allows time for public comment.

Prior to the city commission’s regular meeting today, Toccoa Commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. for a work session to discuss a number of different items.

The Toccoa City Commission work session is also scheduled to take place at Toccoa City Hall and is open to the public.
