Toccoa Commission To Meet Today

Toccoa City Commissioners are expected to consider joining Stephens County Commissioners in calling for a burn ban resolution at their meeting later today.

City commissioners meet at 5 p.m. at Toccoa City Hall.

On the agenda is consideration of the burn ban resolution.

Stephens County Commissioners passed a similar burn ban earlier this month.

The burn ban approved by the county includes all outdoor burning.

That includes warming fires, campfires, fire pits, cooking fires, chimineas, burning barrel fires, fire rings, and fireworks.

According to the county burn ban, the first offense results in a $100 fine, the second offense is a $300 fine, and the third offense will result in a $500 fine.

At that time, Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse noted that a Georgia Forestry Commission burn permit is required to legally burn outdoors in the city and the Forestry Commission was not currently granting any burn permits.

Morse also said earlier this month that anyone caught burning outdoors without a permit in the city would be found in violation of the city’s nuisance ordinance, which covers such situations.

Also on today’s city commission meeting agenda are a host of commission appointments.

Meanwhile, city commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. today for a work session prior to the 5 p.m. meeting to discuss the Tugalo Street sidewalk.

The work session will also take place at Toccoa City Hall and both the work session and the regular meeting of the Toccoa City Commission are open to the public.
