Toccoa Pursuing Grant for Schaefer Center Marquee

The city of Toccoa will pursue another grant to help pay for further improvements to the Schaefer Center.

On Monday, Toccoa City Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution for a Fox Theatre Institute Grant Application for the Schaefer Center marquee.

Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse says this grant would provide partial funding for the total cost of the project.

“The estimated cost of that project is $92,590,” said Morse. “Up to $50,000 in grant funding is available through the Fox Theater Institute. The balance would be a match and we do have those funds budgeted locally.”

There is no word on when the city will hear about whether or not it received the grant.

In other action from Monday’s meeting, the Toccoa City Commission unanimously appointed Frankie Whitworth to fill an unexpired term on the city’s Alcohol Beverage Control board.

Whitworth will fill the term of Gary Donahue, who has moved out of the city limits and therefore can no longer serve on the board.

That unexpired term runs through June 30, 2018.

Also on Monday, Toccoa City Commissioners received a report from Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce President Julie Paysen.

Paysen delivered the same report to Stephens County Commissioners at their meeting last week.
