Toccoa Re-naming Drive After Emory Johnson

Toccoa is renaming a local drive after a late veteran.

Tuesday, Toccoa City Commissioners voted unanimously to rename the driveway that serves the old Whitman Street Recreation Center as Emory Johnson Drive.

City Manager Billy Morse said they are doing so after it was requested earlier this month by the Marine Corps League Currahee Mountain Detachment 1303.

“That driveway also serves two of our new picnic shelters,” said Morse.

Emory Johnson was a Toccoa resident who was killed while serving in Vietnam. Also named after him is Emory Johnson Park, which is in the same area.

Also on Tuesday, Toccoa City Commissioners unanimously approved a Speed Zone Ordinance.

Morse said this new speed zone ordinance was provided to the city from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

“This is the city list of streets with their assigned speed limits,” said Morse.

Morse said it is unchanged from the last time this was passed by the city, but is required in order for the city to enforce speed detection.

When approving the ordinance, city commissioners voted unanimously to also waive the second reading.

That means the ordinance will take effect immediately.
