Toccoa Scarecrow Contest Coming Soon

Fall is right around the corner and Main Street Toccoa is planning to bring back an annual autumn contest.

The fourth annual Main Street Toccoa Scarecrow Contest will take place next month.

Main Street Toccoa Events Coordinator Sharon Crosby said the contest is again open to all of Stephens County.

“We are encouraging businesses and families and schools and different organizations to put up a scarecrow display in front of their business, or some people, if they are a non-profit, would put it in front of another business,” said Crosby.  “It is just a fun way to decorate our community.  Last year, we had such great success.  We had people going from business to business and place to place to see the creativity that people expressed.”

There is no registration fee to enter a scarecrow in the contest, but the deadline for registering in order to be included in the contest is September 27.

The contest does include a $150 first prize, $75 second prize, and a $50 third prize.

Voting will be done online or at various local businesses and the winners will be announced on November 4.

Meanwhile, for those who need help getting started on their scarecrow, a scarecrow workshop will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Toccoa City Hall.

Crosby said Michael Crump of Hartwell will lead the workshop on how to build a scarecrow.

“He led their scarecrow contest for several years,” said Crosby.  “You can drop in, talk to him, and he will go through ways to build a scarecrow.”

The workshop is free to attend.

Crosby said Main Street Toccoa is hoping to see the event continue to build off of last year’s very successful contest.

The scarecrows are to be up from the first weekend of October through the first weekend of November.

“It is a good way to decorate because we have a lot of visitors coming through Toccoa during those weeks,” she explained, noting that Toccoa hosts both the Currahee Military Weekend and the Toccoa Harvest Festival during those weeks.
