Toccoa Unveils Latest Downtown Historic Plaque

troup plaqueMain Street Toccoa wraps up its 2015-2016 series of historic plaques.

The final plaque in the series for this year was unveiled last Thursday at Troup’s Gold Crown Hallmark, the former R.L. Smith Furniture and Appliance at the corner of Doyle and Pond streets in downtown Toccoa.

City officials said that R.L. Smith first started a television and appliance center in the building in 1966 and in January 1972, Smith Furniture opened in the location and stayed there for 21 years.

Smith Furniture is now located on Big A Road.

According to Main Street, Bob Troup bought the building in 1993 to expand his business and Troup’s is still using it today.

This is the last of ten historic plaques to be dedicated in this year in downtown.

City officials said that once all plaques have been installed, a walking tour podcast will accompany them to further bring historical awareness to downtown Toccoa.
