A 27-year-old Fair Play man died Sunday night in the emergency department at Oconee Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in a two vehicle collision. The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated this incident reported to Oconee 911 Communications at 5:54pm.

An 18-year-old Seneca man died early Sunday morning in Oconee County from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision. Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis reports that Cole Dylan Wheeler died at the scene.

The investigation determined Wheeler attended an after-prom party somewhere in the Long Creek area. Wheeler did not actually attend a prom on Saturday night because he had already graduated from high school.

Although toxicology tests will be performed at the SLED laboratory in accordance with state law, alcohol is believed to have contributed to this fatal collision, which occurred at 7:45 a.m. on U.S. 76 near Westminster. The collision was investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Troopers stated that Wheeler’s vehicle ran off the roadway and went down an embankment striking the base of a tree. The car then caught on fire. An autopsy will be performed to assist with this death investigation to establish cause of death.
