Wednesday Accident on By-pass Sends Two To Hospital

A two-car accident sends two people to Stephens County Hospital.

It happened Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the intersection of the Toccoa By-pass and State Route 145.

According to the Toccoa post of the Georgia State Patrol, a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 truck driven by 30-year-old William Michael Pettus of Carnesville was traveling east on the By-pass in the left lane, while a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 39-year-old Catrina Renee Canady of Martin was traveling north on State Route 145 and was attempting to cross over the By-pass.

The GSP said that the front of the truck struck the left side of the other vehicle in the intersection.

In the report, the driver of the truck, Pettus, told troopers he did not know if he had a green light or a red light as he did not look at the traffic signal before traveling through the intersection.

Meanwhile, the driver of the other vehicle, Canady, told troopers that while she initially had difficulties remembering the crash, she remembered looking up at the light as she was entering the intersection and it was orange for traffic on State Route 145.

Troopers said Canady was taken by ambulance to Stephens County Hostpial with incapacitating injuries.

A 1-year-old passenger in her car was also taken to Stephens County Hospital by ambulance with possible injuries.

According to the GSP, Pettus had possible injuries but was not transported for treatment.
