Windstream Announces Service Improvements in North Ga.

At the center of controversy over its service for months, Windstream Communications said it is upgrading its system in parts of north Georgia to allow for higher-speed Internet.

This week, Windstream announced it was already working to upgrade its network in north Georgia to provide more than 67,000 households access to 100 megabits per second Internet.

The upgrade will affect customers in parts of eight north Georgia counties.

Among those are Habersham and Banks counties. Stephens County is not on the list.

Affected communities include Clarkesville, Demorest, Cornelia, Mt. Airy, Baldwin, Alto, and Homer.

Windstream said that in addition to the 100 megabits per second speed upgrades that will be completed by the middle of next year, it is also expanding fiber-to-the-home in select areas.

The company’s President of Operations in Georgia, Jarrod “J” Berkshire, said that they are making significant changes to give customers the experience they deserve, adding that Windstream is committed to expanding access to fast, reliable Internet speeds throughout north Georgia and will continue to make improvements that allow it to do so.

Over the past year, 9th District U.S. Representative Doug Collins has called out Windstream for its service, noting that his office fields more complaints about the poor Internet service Windstream provides than any other complaint.

Also, Collins has demanded Windstream prove how it has spent the millions in federal dollars it received to upgrade its system.

Collins said he is glad to see the investment announcement from Windstream.
