WNEG Goes FM!

After sixty years of broadcasting as an AM station, today WNEG launched a FM signal operating at 93.1 megahertz from Currahee Mountain. Known in the radio industry as a FM translator signal, the FM station will repeat 100% of the AM-630 programming but unlike the AM signal will not have to operate with reduced power during nighttime and early morning hours. This means for the first time, WNEG programming will be available 24/7 on FM radio, not just to all of Stephens County but also to all of Franklin and most of Habersham, Banks, and Oconee County, South Carolina. Unlike AM which can go over mountainous terrain the FM signal will be more limited in the mountainous terrain of Rabun County but a clear signal will reach Tallulah Falls. The transmitter located on the Gunby Communications tower is the highest elevated point in Stephens County and due to its height , 93.1-FM will provide WNEG one of the largest range of a FM translator repeating an AM station. The transmitter site also has a power generator which will allow the signal to continue during widespread electrical power outages.

WNEG began operations on April 21, 1956 at 1320 AM. In 1961 the station moved to 630 raising daytime power to 5000 watts in 2010.
