Work at Two GA 17 Intersections Starts Today, Says DOT

Traffic accessing two roads off of State Route 17 in Stephens County will be affected starting today as crews work on the intersections.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says that part of Fieldcrest Drive and Meadowbrook Drive closest to Georgia Highway 17 will be closed beginning today for about 30 days, if weather permits.

DOT officials say that the grade of Fieldcrest Drive must be raised six feet and the grade of Meadowbrook Drive must be lowered by nine feet to match the grade of the new Highway 17.

However, the DOT says doing that requires the intersections to be closed.

According to the DOT, about 1,000 feet of each road closest to the intersection with State Route 17 will be closed.

The DOT says that the detour route will direct traffic from State Route 17 to the Toccoa Bypass, then to Highway 145, then to Meadowbrook Industrial Road, which will then allow access to either Fieldcrest or Meadowbrook.

Officials are asking motorists to slow down and use extra caution as people get used to this detour.

This is all part of the construction project to build a four-lane Highway 17 from Memorial Drive in Toccoa to the Franklin-Stephens County line.

The entire new, four-lane Highway 17 is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2016.
