Special Events to be Held at Camp Toccoa for D-Day

June will bring another special event to the Toccoa area when Camp Toccoa at Currahee hosts a weekend of special events during D-Day weekend to honor the great American heroes that trained at Camp Toccoa.

Stephens County Historical Society Executive Director Brenda Carlan told WNEG News about the event starting with the Currahee Mountain 10K Run/Walk.

“We are going into our 7th year. We have the D-Day run on Saturday, June 3 and we will probably have around 300 runners,” she said. “At 10 a.m. we will have a dedication of our Open Air Pavilion on the original Camp Toccoa site and our speaker is retired Col. Joe Alexander who served with Currahees of the 3rd Battalion 506th Airborne Infantry during Vietnam.”

The event will begin on Friday night, June 2 with a Banquet.

“This is our 2nd year with a Banquet,” said Carlan. “It will be at the Pavilion. Tickets are $40 and includes meal and entertainment.”

Live music will be provided by the group Big Teach, a group of talented musicians who are high school teachers in the area. There will also be a silent auction. Tickets for the Banquet are available at the gift shop in the Stephens County Museum or at [email protected].

Saturday’s events will also include a battle re-enactment and other free events.

“We will have I guess what you would call a “squirmish” on the property scheduled around 2 p.m. that is produced by living historians and will include some Germans and maybe Russians. We are real excited about that,” said Carlan.

From 10 A.M.-4 P.M. there is on-site military encampment, displays, music and food. Carlan encourages you to sign up for the event and they are also looking for volunteers. For additional information, or to sign up for the run/walk, banquet, or volunteer call
