National Hunting and Fishing Day Saturday

National Hunting and Fishing Day is coming up this Saturday and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division will be hosting a number of free events.

Rusty Garrison, Director of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division tells WNEG News the events are family-oriented, with fun and educational hands-on activities that everyone will enjoy.

Garrison said it’s a great way to introduce youth and newcomers to outdoor sports while teaching them about the important role that hunting and fishing have for Georgia’s wildlife conservation programs.

In Northeast Georgia, an Outdoor Adventure Day will take place Saturday at Unicoi State Park from 10a to 4p.

They include, trout fishing & instruction, skeet, air gun & archery shooting, live animals and more.

The event is free, but there is a $5 parking fee.

And if you’d like to get your kids interested in your favorite sport of fishing there will also be a Kids Fishing Event Saturday from 9a to 1p at the lower pool of Buford Dam on Lake Lanier.

Kids Fishing is open to children ages 15 and younger, but they must be accompanied by an adult.

Bait is provided and the DNR will stock trout for the event.

A limited number of fishing poles will be available so parents are encouraged to have kids bring their own poles if possible.

Fly tying, fishing demos and the JAKES Take Aim trailer will also be part of the events at the Kids Fishing Event.

And in addition to these events, a FREE fishing day is offered to all Georgia residents on Saturday.

That means on Saturday only, you will not need a fishing license or a trout license to fish on any public waters in the state including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas.
