Accidents Up in City of Toccoa

The Toccoa Police Department will look at ways to bring down accident numbers within the city limits in 2016.

That is after 2015 brought an increase in the number of motor vehicle accidents in Toccoa.

Toccoa Police worked 337 accidents in 2015, compared to 270 in 2014.

Chief Tim Jarrell said he does not want to see that trend continue.

“I am not happy with that number,” said Jarrell. “Big A Road still continues to be our hardest area to enforce and our hardest area to get the number of accidents down.”

Jarrell said two main stretches of Big A Road are causing the most problems.

One is the stretch between Currahee Street and around McDonald’s, while the other is the stretch around Wal-Mart and the intersection of the Toccoa By-pass and Big A Road.

The chief said most of the accidents police see on Big A Road are attributable to a few certain factors.

“Aggressive driving behaviors, failing to yield, motorists trying to beat the vehicles when they are entering or exiting the roadway,” said Jarrell.

Jarrell said the Toccoa Police Department will work with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety on some possible ideas and new strategies to help lessen the number of accidents on Big A Road and across the city of Toccoa.
