Boat motor test results in an April swim in Lake Hartwell

Hart County deputies, Hart County EMS and Department of Natural Resources personnel responded to a call near the first bridge on Reed Creek Highway in reference to people in the water and a boat sinking.

Upon arrival, the deputy witnessed a small boat in the water which was partially submerged.

He also spotted a white male swimming toward the shore with a life jacket in his hand.

The deputy, along with bystanders, assisted the male out of the water and to awaiting EMS personnel.

The subject was then assessed by EMS.

The subject, Kevin Jordan, 20, of Lavonia, told the deputy he worked for the Dock Depot and was using the boat to test a couple of boat motors.

The throttle locked on one of the motors and the subject was unable to release the throttle before taking on a wave which capsized the craft.

The subject was able to turn the boat back over but was unable to get into the boat, so he swam to shore instead.

The boat was pulled to the boat ramp and loaded.

In another report from the sheriff’s department, a female resident on Highland Ridge Road called the department to report a pig at large.

The responding deputy talked to the complainant who stated she did not know where the pig came from but it had got into her flowerpots and knocked them over on the sidewalk.

Deputies attempted to catch the pig but were unsuccessful.

The property owner gave permission for animal control to place traps for the pig on the property.
