Boyd Outz Center To Hold GED Classes

Residents of Lavonia and Franklin County now have the opportunity to earn their GED and prepare for college at a local facility.

North Georgia Technical College has teamed up with the Boyd-Outz Center in Lavonia to offer FREE GED® classes and COMPASS preparation classes.

The school says that students will have the opportunity to come to class during the day and evening.

North Georgia Technical College Dean of Adult Education Shelby Ward says the school is excited to offer GED classes once again in Franklin County, adding that they have been looking for the right opportunity to provide classes in Franklin County and the Boyd-Outz Center is exactly what they were looking for.

Located on Highway 77, directly behind the Carnegie Library, the center is run by Ken and Patsy Watkins and has been providing services from Step of Faith Outreach, Inc. to the children of Franklin County.

Stepping into the instructor position is long-time instructor Pamela Lawson.

Lawson has been teaching in the surrounding counties for the past 24 years.

She taught preschool, Kindergarten, 5th grade, 6th grade Science, and wrote the curriculum for and piloted a Science/Math/Technology class for an elementary school in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Lawson holds a bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education, Master’s degree in Elementary Education and endorsements in Early Childhood Education, Science Education, and General Special Education (K-12).

She says she is also excited to be here in Franklin County teaching with North Georgia Technical College and adds she is looking forward to helping adults set goals and make a difference in their personal and professional life.
