Charges Filed After Sheriff Assaulted on Call

A Toccoa man faces charges for allegedly assaulting Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley during a domestic call.

Sheriff Shirley was the first to respond to a a Ranick Drive address at 2 p.m. Wednesday in regards to an alleged ongoing domestic problem.

The Sheriff’s Office said Shirley immediately tried to speak with the man and woman on scene, but was attacked while talking to them.

Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Andy Myers said the Sheriff received injuries to the face after being suddenly and unexpectedly struck.

The sheriff was taken to Stephens County Hospital, where he was treated and released.

36-year-old John Matthew Williams of Ranick Drive was arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Felony Obstruction of an Officer.

Also, 29-year-old Rebecca Faith Heaton of Ranick Drive was arrested and charged with Felony Obstruction of an Officer.

Both were being held in the Stephens County Jail at last report pending a bond hearing.

Chief Deputy Myers said this is something that is becoming far too common across the nation where law enforcement officers performing their duties are becoming the target of attacks by aggressive and uncontrollable people.

Myers said the Sheriff is in good spirits despite his injuries.
