County Takes Numerous Road Related Actions

Stephens County approves an agreement that will help it save money on its asphalt on an ongoing road project.

On Tuesday, Stephens County Commissioners unanimously approved asphalt pricing for Riverdale Road from C.W. Matthews.

County Administratror Phyllis Ayers said that by negotiating all at once with C.W. Matthews, the county has been able to negotiate a price that is better than purchasing it another way.

Ayers said the prices were under the market list price C.W. Matthews had for both leveling and topping.

Road crews are currently working on re-paving Riverdale Road, having started last week on that project.

Ayers said that crews are working very hard on Riverdale, one of a number of projects the county has planned for this year.

“I just cannot say enough about them out there going at it, trying to stay on schedule because we have three dirt roads and two more paved roads,” said Ayers.

Stephens County Commission Chairman Dennis Bell agreed, noting that Riverdale is the second road project crews have worked on in recent weeks.

“You can tell they are doing a great job,” said Bell about Riverdale and Rock Creek Roads. “It is professional looking.”

Crews are expected to be working on Riverdale Road for the next several weeks.

Also on Tuesday, Stephens County Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia Department of Transportation for an off-system safety road project that will be completely state-funded.

According to Ayers, state crews will do new signage and striping for about 78 miles of county roads.

Finally, Stephens County Commissioners unanimously voted to approve a final payment of $159,555.12 to C.W. Matthews for re-surfacing work done last year.

Ayers said this is not extra money, but is a payment was held back from last year and was put aside and paid once the county was satisfied that the work was complete.
