Demorest P.D. Release Information on Thursday Night Call

A call to law enforcement about a situation at a Habersham County convenience store turns out not to be what was first reported.

On its Facebook page, the Demorest Police Department reported that at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to the Express Mart in reference to a possible hostage situation where someone had been shot.

Demorest Police said that within minutes officers arrived on scene and detained a male subject.

According to police, after an initial investigation it was determined that he was being transported to the hospital by a member of his family for a mental evaluation and as they were passing the Express Mart he jumped from the moving vehicle and entered the store while locking the door behind him.

Police said he told the cashier that several members of his family had been shot at his residence in Banks County.

Demorest Police went on to say their officers coordinated with the Banks County Sheriff’s Office who immediately sent deputies to the residence where they found that the subject’s family was unharmed.

According to Demorest Police, they transported the subject to the Habersham County Medical Center for a mental evaluation.

There were no reports of any injuries.
