Early Voting Starts Today in Stephens Co.

Voters in Stephens County can begin casting their ballots in the November election today.

Early voting starts today in Stephens County.

Registrar Bill Cochran says that polls will be open for the next three weeks prior to the November 8 election.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from today through November 4.

There is also a Saturday early voting day on October 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All early voting is at the Stephens County Registrar’s Office, which is located in the Stephens County Courthouse Annex on Tugalo Street in downtown Toccoa.

Voters are of course, making their choice in the presidential election, but there are other races on the ballot.

In Stephens County, voters are choosing a State Court Solicitor as Democratic incumbent Willie Woodruff runs against Republican challenger Ann Pickett.

Also, Johnny Isakson is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate against two challengers, Democrat Jim Barksdale and Libertarian Allen Buckley.

In addition, there is a Public Service Commission race and a host of state constitutional amendment questions on the ballot.

Those who do not vote early will cast ballots on November 8 at the Stephens County Senior Center.

Cochran said turnout for this election is expected to be very high.

“Our voter rolls have increased by over 10 percent,” said Cochran. “Be patient. We do expect there will be some lines at early voting, but nothing like what will compare to the Senior Center on November 8.”

He says the office is preparing for that high turnout, even during early voting, and will work to move people through the polls as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, Cochran said the high interest in this election is already showing up in the number of absentee paper ballots that have been requested.

“We have gone over 500 absentee ballots,” said Cochran.
