Habitat Holds Mortgage Burning

Stephens County Habitat for Humanity celebrates with a new local homeowner as she pays off her home built through the organization.

Saturday, Habitat for Humanity gathered at the home of Teresa Price on Sunset Road to hold a mortgage-burning ceremony.

Price received a Habitat home back in the 1990s and has now paid off the mortgage more than a year early.

Stephens County Habitat for Humanity President David Schreiber said days like Saturday make all of the work worth while.

“It is a special day for Stephens County Habitat and a special day for Teresa Price,” said Schreiber. “It represents a lot of hard work and dedication and the end result is she has her own home paid for.”

Price said it is a day that makes her feel very loved and supported.

“With this turnout, I have her, it is a blessing, it really is,” said Price. “When I was hurt and unable to make payments, God interceded for me. As long as you have faith and prayer, I mean, God will work it out for you, one way or the other.”

She credited family for helping her with payments when she was injured, as well as Habitat for working with her.

“Habitat means love for me because it is the way I was treated through the years,” said Price. “Everyone was so nice and so generous.”

Price called Habitat “a blessing.”

Stephens County Habitat for Humanity builds about one home per year and is up to 20 homes now.

Schreiber said they hope to start work on the next Habitat house later this year.

He went on to say, however, that Habitat for Humanity, needs to find prospective homeowners.

“We need people filling out applications, getting screened,” said Schreiber. “We would like to have a list of people waiting for houses because we have lots and we have money to build them, so we need people.”

There are a host of requirements for owning a home through Habitat for Humanity.
