Hart Co. To Pursue Operation of Corps Parks

Hart County Commissioners will pursue taking over two parks now run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but scheduled for closure.

In November, the Corps announced it was closing Milltown Campground in HartCounty permanently and temporarily closing Longpoint Park.

At its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Hart County Commission heard a presentation on a plan to take over the maintenance of Milltown Campground and Longpoint Park.

Hart County’s administrator said that under the proposed plan, initially, Hart County would open the parks only during the peak visitor season in the summer, adding that under the lease agreement with the Corps, Hart County would lease the parks at essentially no cost in perpetuity.

Several local citizens spoke out in support of Hart County taking over the parks.

After hearing from the public, the Hart County Commission voted unanimously to pursue taking over both parks.
