Hartwell Hosts Polar Bear Plunge Saturday

The 21st annual Polar bear Plunge and Winter Festival on Lake Hartwell has been moved.

The Plunge will still take place Saturday along with the Winter Festival and Chili Cookoff.

However, while it was originally set to be at the Big Oaks Recreation Area this year, the event has been moved back to the same location it has been held at for many years, according to Alice Greene, who is the Chairman for the Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence, which sponsors the event.

Greene said the annual event is put on to help raise funds for the council.

“We are totally a nonprofit agency and all of our funds come from either grants from the federal government or from the local community, and this is one of our fundraisers that we have, this is actually the 21st year for the Polar Bear Plunge, and every dollar we bring in goes directly to support the services, such as the shelter, a lot of the outreach programs for the agency,” said Greene.

The time of the plunge on Saturday has not changed and will still be at 12:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 11:30.
