Humane Shelter Still Overpopulated and Looking for Adopters

The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter is still overpopulated and needs the public’s help.

Executive Director Jeff Roberts said that they now have over 160 cats.

“We really have no space for cats or dogs, but our primary issue is cats with kittens,” said Roberts.

Because of the cat overpopulation, the shelter is doing a buy one, get one cat special.

“Based on where we’re at now, we’re also going to put in place a buy one, get one free where people can adopt one cat and can get another free,” said Roberts. “It’s really ideal to have kittens go out as a pair because they’ll entertain and play together. They’ll sleep together and bond together, it’s just so much better for the animal if the kittens go out in a pair.”

Roberts said many of the cats they have are too young to adopt, but some are old enough for pre-adoption. Pre-adoption allows the owner to take the kitten when it’s old enough and the shelter gets them spayed or neutered.

If you aren’t interested in adopting, you can also foster cats.

“It would be groups of kittens, it may be a mother and kittens if they’re not old enough to be weaned,” said Roberts. “Or they may just be kittens that need to be in a household for a few weeks to get them bigger and more socialized and then brought back for adoption.”

Roberts said that spaying and neutering your animals is important to avoid this overpopulation issue. The shelter offers a $20 spay/neuter program.
