Indians Begin Region Play With Win

The Stephens County Indians are off to a winning start in region football play.

Stephens County started its Region 8-AAAA schedule on a winning note by defeating St. Pius on the road Friday night, 27-13.

Indians’ Head Coach Frank Barden said it was a great effort by the whole team.

“I could not be more proud of these kids and the way they came out here and competed,” said Barden. “They competed for 48 minutes.”

Stephens County quarterback Jackson Bell threw for two first half touchdowns and ran for another in the 3rd quarter to lead the Indians’ offense.

Bell threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Donovan Curry to get the Indians on the board first midway through the first quarter.

St. Pius would tie the game on a short touchdown run early in the second quarter, but Stephens County running back A.J. Howard scored on a 7-yard run with 4 minutes to go in the first half to give the Indians the lead back for good at 14-7.

After the St. Pius punter was sacked late in the second quarter, Bell threw his second touchdown pass to Malik Feaster for 27 yards who made a great catch over 2 defenders in the end zone to extend the Indians lead to 13 at halftime.

Stephens County scored its final touchdown with 9 minutes to go in the third quarter on a 25-yard run by Bell to make it 27-7.

St. Pius would close out the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run with 9:44 left in the game.

Stephens County improves to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the region. St. Pius remains winless at 0-6 and 0-1 in the region.

The Indians will be back home Friday to host Madison County.
