Indians Drop Second Straight

Stephens County comes up just short in its bid for a first region win on the football season.

Friday night, Madison County used three Colby Smith touchdown passes to defeat Stephens County 20-14.

The Indians had the ball in Red Raider territory late in the fourth quarter, but threw an interception that sealed the win for Madison County.

“We battled,” said Indians’ Head Coach Frank Barden. “We’re just not quite good enough. Our kids played hard. Nobody’s happy with where we’re at, but I know the only thing you can do is get back up and go back to work.”

Madison County scored first as Smith found Traveon Latimore for an 18-yard touchdown pass to give the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Indians answered in the second quarter, tying the game at 7 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Hassan Brown, but Madison County took a 14-7 lead to halftime after Smith threw a 4-yard pass to Adam Metts.

Brown’s second touchdown run, this one from 5 yards out, put the Indians even at 14.

However, Smith found Latimore for a 36-yard touchdown pass to give Madison County the lead it would not give up.

Friday marked the first time Madison County has beaten Stephens County since October 20, 1989, a game that the Red Raiders also won by a 20-14 score.

With the loss, the Indians drop to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in region play. This win moves Madison County to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Region 8-AAAA.

Next up for the Indians is a road trip to Watkinsville to face Oconee County on Friday night.
