Indians Take Two Saturday

The Stephens County Indians win both games on Saturday in a three-team doubleheader at Raider Stadium in Habersham County.

In game one for the Indians, Dawson Sorrells pitched six solid innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 6 to lead Stephens County to an 8-2 win over Banks County.

Stephens County scored three runs in the top of the first inning when Austin Page led off with a double, Cayden Maxwell walked, and Chaz Bridges reached on a two-run error. Bridges scored later in the inning on another error on a Bryson Fowler hit ball.

The Indians added another run in the third inning when Maxwell singled, stole second, reached third on a balk call, and scored on a double play ball to make it 4-0.

Banks County cut the lead in half scoring two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2, but the Indians came back with three in the sixth with a 2-run RBI single by Sorrells, and a RBI double by Zach Boyd. The Indians added insurance in the 7th inning when Maxwell singled and scored on Dawson Dean’s double.

Fowler came on to strike out the side in the 7th inning. Sorrells, now 2-0 on the season, got the win for the Indians. Banks County’s Grant Rylee fell to 2-1 with the loss.

The Leopards also loss the opening game of the day falling to Habersham Central 1-0 and are now 3-3 on the season.

 

In the nightcap, Stephens County broke open a pitching duel featuring Bridges and Habersham Central’s Shandon Lee and swept not only the day, but also the season series with the Raiders winning 7-1.

The Indians led 2-0 after one when Page again led the game with a double, and Fowler and Bridges picked up RBI’s.

The Raiders cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning on back to back doubles by Dalton Munroe and Hunter Ingle.

The score stayed at 2-1 until the sixth inning when the Indians scored two on RBI doubles by Bridges and Boyd. They added three more in the 7th inning, one aided by a Raider error, and RBI’s by Cole Beitzel and Boyd.

Bridges, in his first outing this year, got the win for the Indians going 4 innings and allowing one run on 4 hits and striking out nine. Bridges also had a big game at the plate going 3-4 with 2 RBI’s. Fowler got the save, pitching three innings of no-hit ball and striking out four. Lee got the loss for the Raiders. Habersham Central is now 3-2.

Stephens County, ranked #7 in the state in the latest AJC class AAAA poll, is now 6-0 on the season. The Indians also picked up a road win Friday night at Elbert County 7-3 scoring all seven in the first two innings, and getting six strong innings from starting pitcher Gabe White.

The Indians return to the diamond on Monday when they host East Jackson at 6 P.M. Airtime is 5:45 P.M. Monday night on WNEG.
