Investigation Continues Into Shooting Death

Authorities in Toccoa are still asking for the public’s help as the investigation continues into the fatal shooting at a Toccoa apartment earlier this month that left one man dead.

Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell says that his department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the February 7 shooting that left 21-year-old Tomas Colbert of Toccoa dead from gunshot wounds suffered in the incident.

No new details have been released about the case at this point, other than what was made public last week.

It was at about 6:20 a.m. on Sunday, January 7 when the Toccoa Police Department was called to respond to an apartment located on Falls Road in the city limits of Toccoa for a reported call of gunfire.

The apartment is located just north of the Toccoa Post Office.

Jarrell says Colbert had several gunshot wounds to his body and was conscious in the living room of the apartment where he was found.

Colbert was transported first to Stephens County Hospital, then was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died from his wounds shortly after arriving.

According to Jarrell, authorities have had leads to follow up on and have conducted several interviews.

The chief does say that authorities do not feel there is a reason for public alarm.

He adds that police do not believe it to be a random act.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact either the Detective Division of the Toccoa Police Department at 706-282-3236 or the GBI tip line at 1-800-597-8477.
