Lady Indians Split-Deciding Game Today

Emma Whitfield pitched seven strong innings and added a home run to lead the Stephens County Lady Indians to a must-win 5-3 victory over Chapel Hill High School in Douglasville on Wednesday night in the round of 16 AAAA Softball State Playoffs.

The win evened the best of three series at one game each. Chapel Hill took game one 3-1.

In the nightcap, Stephens County scored three runs in the 2nd inning to grab the lead. Whitfield led off the inning reaching on an error, Ashton Ayers walked, Natalie Morgan doubled scoring Casey Westmoreland running for Whitfield, Kat Fuller had an infield single, Mackenzie Rogers hit a sacrifice fly scoring Ayers, and Jasmine Lowery singled scoring Morgan.

Whitfield hit her solo home run in the third to make the score 4-0. Chapel Hill battled back cutting the lead to 4-2 with the 2nd run coming on a Rylie Moody home run.

Stephens County increased the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Morgan reached on an error and scored on a Lowery single. Kira Morgan homered in the final inning for Chapel Hill to trim the lead to 5-3, but Whitfield struck out the final two hitters to seal the win.

Whitfield struck out nine and allowed only four hits to get the win. Lowery led Stephens County at the plate with three hits and two RBI’s.

In the first game, it was a pitching duel between Whitfield of Stephens County and Morgan for Chapel Hill. Morgan allowed only one hit, a solo home run by Kayley Sellers, and came away with the 3-1 win.

Savana Sikes had the only two hits for Chapel Hill, a two-run home run in the first inning and an RBI single in the sixth, but that proved to be enough.

Whitfield was outstanding on the mound for Stephens County allowing just those two hits, and striking out ten.

The two teams will meet in the third and deciding game today at Chapel Hill High School. Airtime is scheduled for 5:15 P.M. this afternoon with first pitch at 5:30 here on WNEG.
