Last Day to File Your 2017 Taxes

If you are one of the many who has waited until the last minute to file your taxes, you only have hours now to do so.

The 2017 tax filing deadline is midnight tonight.

The IRS expects to receive about received just over 14-million returns last week and expects to receive another 17 million tax returns this week.

With so little time to file your return, the IRS advises everyone who has waited until the last minute to file electronically.

Additionally, the IRS is expecting to receive more than 14 million extension requests from taxpayers.

Now if you need more time to file, you can apply for an extension.

The IRS allows taxpayers to extend their time to file until October 15, but it does not extend the time to pay any taxes due.

Applying for an extension of time to file is easy and free.

Individual tax filers can e-file their extension form for free using Free File.

You can also get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card.

Taxpayers can also request an extension through a paid tax preparer, using tax-preparation software, or by mailing a paper Form 4868.

If mailing a Form 4868, the form must be mailed to the IRS with a postmark on or before April 17.

And if you owe money but can’t pay all of the money at once, the IRS will work with you to make payment arrangements.

However, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers who can’t pay the full amount of federal taxes they owe that they should file their tax return on time by midnight tonight and pay as much as possible.
