Law Enforcement Ready for New Year’s Holiday

Georgia Department of Public Safety Commissioner Colonel Mark W. McDonough said troopers and other law enforcement will be keeping a close watch for impaired drivers and motorists not obeying Georgia’s traffic laws as 2016 starts tonight.

The New Year holiday travel period will begin at 6 p.m.  today and end Sunday, January 3.

It is 78 hours long.

During the New Year’s travel period last year, there were 724 crashes and 318 injuries reported. Also, 10 people were killed on Georgia’s roads.

Also, 349 people were arrested for driving under the influence during the New Year’s holiday last year.

Again this holiday season, Georgia State Troopers are teaming up with law enforcement officials from across the state for “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”, a high visibility enforcement campaign which targets impaired drivers.

Colonel McDonough said that anyone who is drinking should have a designated, sober driver if they are headed out on the roads.

He went on to say that they want everyone to enjoy the holiday season, but they also want motorists to be safe on the state’s highways.
