People First Gives Back with Holiday Event

A group of people with disabilities gives back to the community.

People First of Stephens County held its annual Christmas party to help others in the community in Toccoa last Thursday.

People First is an advocacy group for individuals with disabilities made up of people with disabilities.

People First Volunteer Supporter Jeraldine Hayes says that the organization started this effort five years ago.

She said it is a great chance for People First to give back to Toccoa and Stephens County.

“We buy gifts for the PeerCenter,” said Hayes.  “Usually it is about 50 people that we buy gifts for and also (we) prepare a meal.”

Hayes said that the event could not happen, however, without the support of a lot of other groups in the community.

“The Stephens County Middle School FFA has helped us for the whole five years,” said Hayes.  “We have Stephens County Missionary Workshop that has helped.  We also have, for the first time, the Martin Women’s Club.  They have come on board and really been a tremendous help.”

Hayes said she appreciates each of those groups and all of the help and support they provided in making the event happen.
