Possible Fire Stopped Train Between Ga., S.C. on Sunday; Nothing Found

Railroad tracks between Georgia and South Carolina were shut down for a time on Sunday because of a suspected train fire.

Oconee County, South Carolina Fire Chief Charlie King said a train passing through Westminster on Sunday morning was believed to have had several freight cars on fire, according to a 911 caller.

Dispatchers were able to get the train stopped between Westminster and the Georgia state line.

Once stopped, firefighters and train crews were able to check the train for hazards and none were found.

However, reports indicated that until the “all clear” was given, traffic on the line was stopped.

According to King, a potential brake issue has been identified as the cause of the smoke that triggered the call.

He said the freight train resumed its planned trip Sunday around noon and all units cleared the scene.
