Progress Made on SCHS Projects

Work continues on a host of projects at Stephens County High School.

The Stephens County Board of Education received an update on those projects at its work session and called meeting on Thursday.

Stephens County School System Director of Operations Tim Wilbanks said that a number of projects are nearing completion in the next several days.

He said that the roof and associated work, along with mechnanical and electrical work, should be wrapped up soon.

Meanwhile, Wilbanks said that crews have also completed gutting the old academic building.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said crews did a good job on that.

“If you had walked in there before versus now, while it might look ghostly to those that have never been in there, it is a beautiful sight,” said Dorsey.

The Stephens County School System used funding from a seven-year bond approved earlier this year through the Stephens County Schools Building Authority to do this work.

Dorsey said with money still available from that, he would also like to install new steps into the Currahee Arena.

“We have had several concerns and a number of complaints about where we did not build steps to the gym when we built the high school,” said Dorsey. “It is something that we would love to address before this coming basketball season. At night, it is a safety issue for us.”

Dorsey said he would like the Board of Education to consider that item on Tuesday’s meeting agenda.
