SCHS Softball Season Starting

Stephens County High School softball gets its season underway later today.

The Lady Indians are led by a new coach, Dave Poffenburger.

He said he is grateful for the opportunity to coach the Lady Indian softball team this year.

“When Coach Barden, I was very honored to do that,” said Poffenburger. “We are really excited about the start of our season. We feel like it is going to be a good season for us.”

He said he appreciates all of the support from the parents as he has stepped in to the head coach’s role.

Poffenburger said the Lady Indians return a lot of players from last year’s team.

However, he said the team does remain young, with no seniors on it this year.

With that in mind, he said the Lady Indians have worked on a lot of basics to get ready for the season.

“The biggest focus was first of all, getting in shape, but also we worked on a lot of fundamentals,” said Poffenburger.

Poffenburger did say that the youth does bring a lot of potential.

He said he feels they have the talent to compete in Region 8-AAAA with teams like perennial power Buford.

He also pointed to Madison County as a team that is always worth watching.

To start the season, the Lady Indian softball team will host a tournament today and Saturday at the Reservation.

Joining Stephens County in the tournament are Elbert County, East Jackson, Hart County, and Banks County.

Poffenburger said they are excited for the chance to start the season in a tournament setting at home.

“Everybody is going to get a chance to play four games against each other,” he said. “It ought to be a good tournament.”
