SCHS Wrestlers Set Record In Area Tourney

Stephens County High School wrestlers set a school record.

On Saturday, Stephens County hosted the Region 8-AAAA Area Wrestling Tournament at the Currahee Arena in Toccoa.

The Indians qualified a school-record ten wrestlers into the State Sectional Tournament through the area tournament, breaking the previous record of eight wrestlers.

Finishing as area runners-up for the Indians were Lee Massey at 106 pounds, Nikko Beady at 132 pounds, Jay Stowe at 145 pounds, Corey Kindel at 152 pounds, and Gavin Walker at 195 pounds.

Third-place finishers for Stephens County at the area tournament were Cameron White at 170 pounds, Dylan Defoor at 182 pounds, and Garrison Walker at 285 pounds.

Finishing fourth at the area tournament and also moving on to sectionals was Brooks McLaughlin at 120 pounds.

As a team, Stephens County finished third at Saturday’s area tournament, just missing out on second place as a team to Oconee County.

Jefferson won the tournament championship.

Next up is the State Sectional Tournament at Jefferson High School on Friday and Saturday.

That tournament will have the top four finishers from Regions 2-AAAA, 3-AAAA, 7-AAAA, and 8-AAAA.

The top eight finishers from the sectional tournament will compete at the State AAAA Championships in Macon from February 9 through February 11.
