Stephens Co. Commission Meeting Today

Stephens County Commissioners will wrap up their calendar year with a meeting this morning.

County commissioners will meet at 8:30 a.m. for a regularly scheduled meeting in the second-floor courtroom of the historic Stephens County Courthouse in downtown Toccoa.

This is the final scheduled meeting of the year for the Stephens County Commission.

County commissioners will begin their meeting at 8:30 a.m. with a work session to discuss items on the business meeting agenda.

The business meeting, when agenda items are voted on as needed, will come immediately at the end of the work session.

Among the items on today’s agenda is continued discussion of a proposal by the county to pursue abandoning part of Camp Mikell Road that begins at a creek that does not have a bridge over it and continues onto Forest Service property.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers says there are several reasons that the county wants to look at abandoning just that section of the road.

According to Ayers, among the reasons for considering this is the fact that there is a creek that the equipment needs to cross that does not have a bridge on it, making getting across the creek difficult.

Also, Ayers says that even when the equipment crosses the creek, it is hard to manuever and turn around and notes that no equipment to do maintenance has crossed the creek in three years.

County commissioners previously discussed the matter at their last meeting, but wanted to consider it further before making a decision.

Today’s Stephens County Commission also allows time for public comment.
