Stephens Co. Denies Road Maintenance Request

A Lake Harbor Shores resident is trying to get three roads in that community taken over by the county so as to have easier access to city water.

Donald Maule appeared before Stephens County Commissioners on Tuesday.

He is requesting that the county add Tomahawk Trail, Apache Trail, and Navahoe Trail to the county road maintenance system.

Maule said this would give these residents, 18 in all by his count, a chance to access city water service.

According to Maule, that is something that is needed.

“Most of those residents are on well water, which has been in service since 1972 and wells are failing,” said Maule. “Right now, they are paying almost double what the city would be charging for its water.”

Maule and another Lake Harbor Shores resident had gone before Toccoa City Commissioners earlier this year asking for water lines to be run down what are currently private drives.

City commissioners said at the time they would not even consider running the lines until the roads in question became county roads.

On Tuesday, Maule told county commmissioners that in his opinion, the work required to get these three roads up to standard for the county would be minimal.

However, no price could be put on it on Tuesday.

As a result, county commissioners voted unanimously to deny the request to take over the three roads at this time.

They did ask staff to go look at the roads and come back with a cost estimate at a later date.
