Stephens Co. Registrar Search Continues

Stephens County officials said they are still waiting to finalize a new County Registrar.

According to officials, two finalists were interviewed in recent days by Mountain Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Rusty Smith, who will make the official appointment.

Now, officials said it is a matter of finalizing an offer with the person that is offered the position.

Stephens County has been without a Registrar and Elections Superintendent since August, when Theresa Kelley resigned suddenly from the position.

Earlier this month, the Stephens County grand jury met with County Administrator Phyllis Ayers to go through the names of about 20 applicants.

From that group, the two names were given to Mountain Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Rusty Smith to interview and make the appointment.

Once hired, Ayers said that the new Registrar and Elections Superintendent will work in their own office and report directly to Ayers, instead of working in the Probate Office as had been set up earlier this year.
