Stephens Co. Special Olympics Competes in Fall Games

Stephens County Special Olympic athletes bring home medals after the recent State Fall Games.

This year’s State Fall Games for Special Olympics of Georgia took place this past Friday through Sunday in Gainesville.

This year, Stephens County Special Olympics had seven bocce teams competing and three Equestrian competitors in the Horse Show event.

All athletes representing Stephens County did so very well, according to organizers.

The bocce teams brought home two gold medals, two silver medals, two bronze medals, and a fourth place award.

Meanwhile, Stephens County equestrian competitors brought home one gold, four silver, two bronze, and two fourth place.

Stephens County Special Olympics’ management team and athletes say they would like to thank everyone that donated to their fundraisers and sponsored athletes in order to go compete in these events.

Organizers note that Stephens County Special Olympics does not receive any outside funds and relies on the generosity of the community for donations, with 100 percent of donations staying with the athletes.

Also, Stephens County Special Olympics leaders would like to thank Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Toccoa Police Department for providing a police escort out of town on Friday on the way to the games.

Stephens County Special Olympics says the next big event for its athletes is the annual Bowling Tournament on November 18 at Rose Lanes in Toccoa, with over 100 local athletes competing.
