Stephens Co. Voters Decide Today on E-SPLOST

Stephens County voters will make a decision today on whether to renew the Stephens County school system’s E-SPLOST for another five years.

Today is Election Day.

Stephens County Registrar Bill Cochran said polls will be open all day today at the Stephens County Senior Center on Rose Lane in Toccoa.

“Polls open at 7 a.m., they will close at 7 p.m. today,” said Cochran.

All voting today is at the Senior Center. There is no voting today at the Stephens County Registrar’s Office.

Voters will need a photo ID.

He also reminded voters that anyone with a mail-in, paper absentee ballot must have it turned into the Registrar’s Office by 7 p.m. today.

Cochran said county voters are encouraged to get out and make their voices heard.

“We had 703 early, in-person voters that came to the Registrar’s Office to vote during the three weeks of early voting,” said Cochran. “It was very light turnout. We do hope we have a much larger turnout today.”

Stephens County voters are casting ballots on whether or not to continue the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Education for another five years.

According to Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey, the revenues generated from the renewal of the E-SPLOST would go towards maintenance and technology needs throughout the system, as well as CTAE renovations at the high school.

Dorsey said that this would not be a new tax, but a continuation of the one penny that is already being collected.
